The fix: Before approving any AI project, answer: does this initiative directly impact revenue, or does it reduce cost? Both are valuable, but revenue-generating initiatives deserve priority and more investment.
Mistake 6: One-Time Implementation Thinking
AI systems are not like traditional software implementations where you build once, go live, and maintain. They require continuous improvement: prompt refinement as outputs drift, model updates when new versions are released, workflow adjustments as business processes change, and regular performance audits.
Companies that treat AI as "done" after implementation consistently see value degrade over 6–12 months.
The fix: Plan for ongoing optimisation from day one. Designate someone responsible for each AI system's performance. Schedule quarterly reviews. Allocate ongoing budget for improvements, not just initial build.
Mistake 7: Building Everything Custom When 80% Exists Off the Shelf
Many companies spend months and significant budget building custom AI systems for use cases that existing tools solve adequately. Custom AI development is appropriate for genuinely differentiated needs — not for general business processes.
